The name Leaf Mold comes from the old English words “Leaf Mould” which means produced by a very slow breakdown of leaves (from trees and shrubs) into rich humus. After a long slow composting period of 18-24 months the compost is screened to ensure consistency and size.
Recommended use:
New Raised Beds:
Depth of Leaf Mold Compost: Aim for a depth of 1 to 2 inches of leaf mold compost on the surface of your raised bed. This depth is sufficient to improve soil structure, enhance moisture retention, and add beneficial microorganisms.
Mixing with Existing Soil: After spreading the compost, mix it into the top 6 to 8 inches of the soil. This integration helps to improve the overall soil quality and ensures that the nutrients are well-distributed.
